WIPO Director General Visits France, Advances Francophone IP Cooperation

WIPO Director General Daren Tang concluded a two-day official visit to Paris on June 11, 2025, underlining France’s pivotal role in the global innovation ecosystem and its leadership in digital transformation, cultural innovation and international cooperation within the Francophone world.

The visit was held in the context of VivaTech, Europe’s largest startup and tech event, where Mr. Tang engaged with industry leaders and Government officials, witnessing France’s vibrant innovation landscape fueled by forward-looking policies such as the €54 billion “France 2030” plan.

Paris Engagements

  • Met with Minister of Culture Rachida Dati to discuss the convergence of culture, creativity and IP protection.
  • Met with Minister for Industry and Energy Marc Ferracci to discuss the vital role of IP in driving innovation, competitiveness and the digital economy.
  • Discussed with Minister Delegate of Francophonie and Partnerships Thani Mohamed-Soilihi strengthening IP cooperation across Francophone Africa to foster inclusive economic growth.
  • Engaged with Mr. Bruno Bonnell, Head of the General Directorate for Investments and discussed the France 2030 Plan, which channels billions of Euros into innovation and strategic sectors. They also explored how to demystify IP to better support innovation, increase IP awareness among startups and entrepreneurs and strengthen the links between IP and financing mechanisms for innovators.
  • Signed a tripartite agreement between WIPO, the Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle (INPI) and the Permanent Conference of African and Francophone Consular Chambers and Intermediary Organizations to enhance support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Francophone Africa by leveraging trusted local business intermediaries and expanding IP awareness and services.
  • Engaged with INPI Director General Pascal Faure and his team on strengthening bilateral cooperation, including on joint IP-related projects targeting grassroots innovation, SMEs, youth and women entrepreneurs across France and the Francophone world.
