  • ~65,000 international trademark applications filed (+1.2%); ~452,889 designations (+1.1%)
  • 915,034 international trademark registrations in force (+2.7%)
  • 7,325,670 designations in active international trademark registrations (+0.6%)
  • For the fourth consecutive year, the UK received the most designations (28,877) in international trademark applications filed in 2024.

Who were the biggest users of the Madrid System in 2024?

Applicants in the United States of America filed the highest number of international trademark applications (11,270) – a 2.5% increase on 2023 – followed by Germany (6,449), China (5,828), France (4,211) and the United Kingdom (UK) (3,736).

L'Oréal of France maintained its lead position for a fourth consecutive year, filing 244 applications. Switzerland’s Novartis AG climbed two spots to become the second top filer (193 applications), followed by Bulgaria’s Euro Games Technology (141).

The most used classes of goods and services…

Class 9 – which includes computer hardware and software – of the Nice Classification accounted for some 10.8% of all classes of goods and services specified in 2024 international trademark applications.

Other top classes included class 35 (services such as office functions, advertising and business management); class 42 (services provided by scientific, industrial or technological engineers, etc.) and class 41 (services in the areas of education, training, entertainment, sporting and cultural activities).
